Soccer vs. Itawamba

Wallace State's Elijah Wong fights for possession of the ball in the second half of the Lions' 2-0 win over Itawamba.

HANCEVILLE, Ala. - The Wallace State men’s soccer team earned a hard-fought 2-0 win over Itawamba Community College on Tuesday, riding a strong second-half performance and a stellar defensive effort to notch the home victory.

After a scoreless opening half, the Lions came out of the break with intensity. In the 47th minute, Sammy Schofield broke through with the first goal of the match, finishing cleanly off an assist from Elias Meinhardt. The early strike shifted momentum firmly in Wallace State’s favor as they controlled much of the second-half action.

The Lions added insurance in the 79th minute when Elijah Wong found the back of the net, assisted by Austin Holley, capping off the scoring.

Defensively, Wallace State stood tall behind goalkeeper Emrik Senécal, who recorded his first career shutout. Senécal made eight saves, turning away multiple dangerous Itawamba chances to preserve the clean sheet. While the visitors controlled possession for much of the first half, the Lions’ defense held firm, and Wallace State’s offensive pressure began to mount with five near-misses before the halftime whistle.

Head coach James Fee praised his squad’s complete effort after the match.

“Great team performance all around! Juan Gazga was fantastic both in possession and defensively. Emrik Senécal was fantastic in goal for us and bailed us out multiple times!” Fee said.

With the win, Wallace State showcased its resilience, striking at key moments and locking down defensively to secure the shutout.

The Lions continue their homestand on Saturday with a conference match against Calhoun starting at 3:00 pm.
